Biogen Q3 2026 results graphic showing revenue growth

The Biogen Q3 2026 results, released on 28 October 2026, show a company growing sales again while its profit measures fell sharply. Biogen reported total revenue of $2,804.1 million for the third quarter, up 11% from $2,534.7 million a year earlier, and said its growth portfolio rose 49%. It also nudged up the bottom of its full-year earnings guidance. But the headline needs context: non-GAAP earnings per share dropped to $2.62 from $4.81, the GAAP result was a loss, and the guidance range had been cut in July. This explainer sets out what changed, why, and what the company has not said.

Key takeaways from the Biogen Q3 2026 results

  • Total revenue was $2,804.1 million, up 11% (10% at constant currency); product revenue was $2,088.7 million, up 13%.
  • Non-GAAP diluted EPS was $2.62 against $4.81 a year earlier; GAAP diluted EPS was a loss of $0.14 per share.
  • Both profit measures include about $284 million of acquired in-process R&D and related charges, mainly from the RayThera acquisition.
  • Full-year non-GAAP EPS guidance now stands at $12.20 to $13.00, up from $12.00 to $13.00 in July but well below February’s $15.25 to $16.25.
  • A key Phase 3 lupus readout for litifilimab is expected in the first half of December 2026.

The headline numbers in the Biogen Q3 2026 results

Revenue growth was broad enough to matter. Total revenue of $2,804.1 million compares with $2,534.7 million in the third quarter of 2025, which works out at about 10.6% by our own calculation, in line with the 11% the company reported. The company said the Growth Portfolio, which includes Leqembi, Skyclarys, Zurzuvae and the eye and rare-disease products, generated about $1.26 billion, up 49%, and made up roughly 63% of core pharmaceutical revenue. Chief executive Christopher Viehbacher said the quarter demonstrated that Biogen had returned to growth. That is the company’s characterisation; the figures above come from its own announcement, available on the Biogen investor relations site.

Why earnings fell in the Biogen Q3 2026 results despite higher sales

The difference between revenue and profit is largely about acquisition accounting and one-off charges. Non-GAAP net income was $391.4 million against $707.5 million a year earlier, and non-GAAP diluted EPS fell to $2.62 from $4.81, a decline of about 45% by our own calculation. On a GAAP basis the company posted a net loss of $20.6 million, or $0.14 per share, against a profit of $3.17 per share a year earlier. Biogen said both measures include $284 million of acquired in-process R&D, upfront and milestone expense, mainly tied to the RayThera acquisition. GAAP research and development spending was $574.0 million and selling, general and administrative expense was $752.0 million. The brief headline of rising revenue is accurate; it just does not describe the earnings picture on its own.

What “raised guidance” actually means in the Biogen Q3 2026 results

Guidance is where wording matters most. In February, Biogen guided to full-year non-GAAP EPS of $15.25 to $16.25. In July it cut that range to $12.00 to $13.00, citing roughly $3.00 of acquired R&D and similar charges and about $0.85 of dilution from the Apellis acquisition. In October, it moved the low end to $12.20, so the range is now $12.20 to $13.00. By our own calculation the midpoint rose from $12.50 to $12.60. The company also said Apellis dilution is now expected to be about $0.55 and acquired R&D charges about $3.20, which would leave underlying guidance of $15.95 to $16.75. So the range was raised at the bottom, after being lowered earlier in the year, and remains well under the February starting point.

The Apellis effect in the Biogen Q3 2026 results

Biogen closed its acquisition of Apellis in May 2026, adding Syfovre, for geographic atrophy, and Empaveli. Syfovre contributed $191.3 million and Empaveli $51.5 million in the quarter. Prior-year figures for those products come from Apellis’s own filings, so year-on-year comparisons for the combined company should be read with care. Part of the reported growth therefore reflects acquired products and not only organic gains. The company has not broken out how much of the 11% revenue growth is acquired in the data we reviewed.

Balance sheet and cash in the Biogen Q3 2026 results

At 30 September, Biogen held about $1.3 billion in cash and about $7.7 billion of debt, which implies net debt of about $6.4 billion by our own calculation. Third-quarter operating cash flow was about $641 million and free cash flow about $600 million. Filings are available through the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Revenue is expected to grow by a mid-single-digit percentage for the year, with combined non-GAAP R&D and SG&A of about $4.95 billion.

Acumen Research and Consulting’s Biopharmaceutical Market report values the global market at USD 328 billion in 2021 and projects USD 853 billion by 2030, a CAGR of 11.3% for 2022 to 2030. It says North America held over 33% of the market in 2021 and that monoclonal antibodies accounted for about 32%. The report is broad and dated, so it frames the industry backdrop and says nothing specific about Biogen. See our Pharmaceutical coverage.

GAAP figures follow standard accounting rules. Non-GAAP figures adjust for items a company considers unusual, such as acquisition costs. Both are useful, and neither is a forecast. Comparing them shows how much of a result depends on one-off events.

Our analysis of the Biogen Q3 2026 results

In our assessment, the Biogen Q3 2026 results support the claim that revenue is growing again, helped by newer products and acquisitions, but they do not show earnings recovery. The raised low end of guidance is small and follows a cut. The next test is whether the growth portfolio continues to offset the decline in multiple sclerosis products.
