The Biocon Pebrilzo launch now has dates attached. On 14 October 2026 Biocon announced a global settlement and licence agreement with Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, that resolves their pending patent disputes over Pebrilzo, Biocon’s biosimilar of the breast cancer medicine Perjeta (pertuzumab). Biocon says the agreement allows it to launch in the European Union and the United Kingdom in the first quarter of 2027 and in the United States in the third quarter of 2028, subject to regulatory approvals.
Those dates are licence dates, not approval dates. This report separates what the settlement settles from what regulators still have to decide, and flags what neither company has disclosed.
Biocon Pebrilzo launch: key takeaways
- Deal: a global settlement and licence agreement between Biocon and Genentech, announced on 14 October 2026.
- Europe and UK: launch permitted in the first quarter of 2027, subject to approvals.
- United States: launch permitted in the third quarter of 2028.
- Other markets: launches planned from 2026 through 2028, or earlier in certain circumstances, according to reports of the announcement.
- Not disclosed: the financial and other terms, which the companies have kept confidential.
Biocon Pebrilzo launch: dates by region
Biocon describes the dates as the earliest licensed launch dates. Reports of the announcement give the following schedule.
- EU and UK: first quarter of calendar year 2027.
- US: third quarter of calendar year 2028.
- Rest of the world: launches between 2026 and 2028, with earlier launch possible in certain unspecified circumstances.
By our calculation, using the midpoints of each quarter, the US date falls roughly a year and a half after the European one. The reports we reviewed do not name the rest-of-world countries covered.
Where the Biocon Pebrilzo launch stands with regulators
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) page for Pebrilzo shows that its human medicines committee issued a positive opinion on 17 September 2026. The page lists the active substance as pertuzumab and calls Pebrilzo highly similar to the reference product Perjeta. At the time we checked, it did not show a European Commission decision, which is the step that grants the marketing authorisation. The page names Biocon Biologics Ireland Limited as the applicant in its overview but lists a different company, Biosimilar Collaborations Ireland Limited, in its product table, so we do not state which entity will hold the authorisation.
We found no information on the UK or US approval status of Pebrilzo. In the US, the first Perjeta biosimilar, Poherdy from other developers, was approved in November 2025, which shows that the US route is open to pertuzumab biosimilars even though Biocon’s own licensed date is later.
What Pebrilzo is for
Pertuzumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the HER2 receptor. According to the EMA, the Pebrilzo indications mirror those of the reference medicine: in combination with trastuzumab and docetaxel for HER2-positive metastatic or locally recurrent unresectable breast cancer in patients not previously treated with anti-HER2 therapy or chemotherapy for metastatic disease, and with trastuzumab and chemotherapy before and after surgery for high-risk early HER2-positive breast cancer. The EMA’s Perjeta page shows Perjeta has been authorised in the EU since 4 March 2013, held by Roche Registration GmbH.
What the Biocon Pebrilzo launch settlement does not tell us
- The financial terms, such as any royalties or upfront payments.
- Which patents were involved and how the disputes were resolved in each country.
- Which rest-of-world markets are covered.
- Whether launch is tied to any other conditions beyond approval.
- The price or discount that Biocon plans for Pebrilzo.
Why the Biocon Pebrilzo launch matters
A biosimilar is a biological medicine shown to be highly similar to an already approved reference product. For cancer centres and health systems, the arrival of a competing pertuzumab can create room for negotiation, but the size of any saving depends on prices that have not been announced. For Biocon, an Indian biosimilar maker, a licensed European date reduces the legal uncertainty around the product. Risks and caveats for the Biocon Pebrilzo launch
- Launch dates are conditional on regulatory approvals that were not all confirmed when we checked.
- The announcement does not give details of the terms or the regions beyond the main markets.
- Biocon’s own statements are the source of the launch dates, and we have not seen the agreement.
- Earlier US competition from another pertuzumab biosimilar may affect the market Biocon enters in 2028.
In our assessment, the settlement removes the biggest legal obstacle, but the practical test is the European Commission decision and the first tender wins. Settling for a Q3 2028 US date also suggests Biocon accepted a long wait in exchange for certainty, a trade that is common in biologics but which costs time in the largest market.
What to watch next for the Biocon Pebrilzo launch
- The European Commission decision following the 17 September committee opinion.
- UK and US regulatory filings or approvals for Pebrilzo.
- Disclosure of the rest-of-world launch countries.
- Pricing and early tender activity in Europe.

How we reported this: we relied on Biocon’s announcement of 14 October 2026 as reported, the EMA pages for Pebrilzo and Perjeta, and an FDA bulletin on the first US Perjeta biosimilar. We could not open Biocon’s own release page. Figures labelled as ours are our own calculations. Last updated: 15 October 2026. This article is news reporting and not medical or investment advice.
