Graphic: Ebola outbreak October 2026 showing DR Congo provinces with the eighth province highlighted and Kenya eighth case

The Ebola outbreak October 2026 has two new developments. Authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) said on 18 October that the virus had reached North Ubangi, an eighth affected province, and Kenya announced an eighth confirmed case on 19 October after testing on 18 October. Both updates concern the Bundibugyo virus outbreak that began in May 2026. This report keeps locations, counts and the timeline separate, and says what official health agencies have and have not confirmed. Nothing in the sources we reviewed links this outbreak to a case in India.

Ebola outbreak October 2026: key takeaways

  • DRC: the government says the outbreak has reached North Ubangi, its eighth province; two cases have been reported there.
  • Kenya: an eighth case was announced on 19 October, a 49-year-old man who worked as a hospital patient attendant.
  • Scale: official agency data to 14 October show 9,277 confirmed cases and 4,478 deaths in the DRC.
  • Virus: Bundibugyo virus, for which WHO says there is no approved vaccine or specific treatment.
  • India: no case linked to India appears in the sources reviewed.

What is new on 18 and 19 October

On Sunday 18 October the DRC government said the virus had reached North Ubangi, according to reports of its statement. Earlier agency data listed seven affected provinces, so North Ubangi would be the eighth. Two cases have been reported there, but the case and death figures for the new province are not yet in the official surveillance summaries we reviewed. Separately, Kenya’s Director-General for Health, Patrick Amoth, said one of 38 people tested on 18 October was positive, giving the country its eighth case.

Where the Ebola outbreak October 2026 stands in the DRC

Counts depend on the date and the source, so we keep them apart. WHO’s WHO outbreak notice of 8 October 2026 gave 8,728 confirmed cases and 4,205 deaths as of 6 October, a crude case fatality ratio of 48.2%. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, using data to 14 October, reported 9,277 confirmed cases and 4,478 deaths in the DRC, with 65 new cases and 37 deaths on 14 October alone. Government figures cited on 18 and 19 October put the total at least 9,400 cases and more than 4,500 deaths. Ituri accounts for 6,806 of the 9,277 confirmed cases in the ECDC data, which is about 73% by our arithmetic.

Timeline of the Ebola outbreak October 2026

  • May 2026: the outbreak is detected in the DRC.
  • 17 May: WHO’s outbreak records point to a determination of a public health emergency of international concern.
  • 25 August: Uganda’s outbreak is declared over after 42 days without a new case.
  • 5 to 6 October: Kenya reports its first imported case, who died on 5 October.
  • 14 October: Kenya reports a second case in a close family contact.
  • 17 October: Kenya’s ministry reports four new cases, bringing the total to seven.
  • 18 to 19 October: North Ubangi is named as the eighth DRC province, and Kenya confirms an eighth case.

Kenya’s eighth case

The patient is a 49-year-old man with fever, headache and muscle pain who worked as a patient attendant cleaning utensils and linens, reports quoting the health director-general say. He is not a health worker, and he developed symptoms on 17 October, was quarantined and tested. An unnamed ministry source said he is believed to have been exposed through contact with Kenya’s first case. Of the seven earlier cases, three were health workers who had treated the first patient, according to the ministry. The CDC’s summary, last updated before these cases, counted only two confirmed cases in Kenya, which shows how quickly the figures move.

What the update means for India

WHO assesses the global risk as low and the risk to the rest of the African region as low, while rating the national risk in the DRC very high and the risk in neighbouring countries high, in its notice of 8 October. WHO advises against restrictions on travel to or trade with affected countries. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention publishes its own situation summary for the Ebola outbreak October 2026. We have not seen any Indian government advisory on this outbreak and make no claim about one. People planning travel to the region should check official guidance, and anyone with symptoms after travel should seek medical advice. This article is not medical advice.

About the Bundibugyo virus behind the Ebola outbreak October 2026

Bundibugyo virus is one of the viruses that cause Ebola disease. WHO’s notice says no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists for it, and that a WHO-coordinated clinical trial of treatments began enrolling patients in July 2026. Because standard Ebola vaccines target a different species, the control measures that remain are tracing, isolation, safe burial and infection control. WHO reported that 80.4% of contacts were being followed as of 4 October, below the 85% target.

What we cannot confirm

We could not find official figures for North Ubangi, and a report of a death there is not in the official data we reviewed, so we do not state a death toll for the province. Kenya’s count also differs between sources because of reporting dates. Government, WHO and national figures differ and will be revised.

Risks and caveats on the Ebola outbreak October 2026

  • Counts are changing daily and differ by source and date.
