The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a nationwide health advisory after seeing a significant jump in reports of human rabies exposures over the summer, along with a rise in errors in how post-exposure treatment is being administered. The alert, issued Thursday through the CDC’s Health Alert Network, is aimed primarily at clinicians and health departments, but carries a clear message for the public as well: rabies exposures are climbing, and getting the response right matters.

What the CDC Advisory Says

According to the CDC, multiple U.S. jurisdictions have reported local increases in human rabies exposures since July 2026, involving both well-known rabies vector species and animals where rabies is less commonly reported. From July through August, the agency received 17 percent more rabies-related inquiries than during the same period in 2025, including reports of mass exposure events involving more than one person at once.

The CDC also said it has received reports from at least eight state health departments describing increased use of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis, commonly known as PEP, administration errors, or both. Weekly pharmacy data through early September shows rabies vaccine utilization is up an estimated 33 percent compared with the same period last year, while use of rabies immunoglobulin, the antibody treatment given alongside the vaccine, is up 76 percent. The agency noted there is currently no shortage of either product in the United States, but stressed that PEP has to be administered correctly to be effective.

Why Rabies Exposures Are Rising This Summer

Rabies exposures typically peak during the summer months, when people spend more time outdoors and are more likely to cross paths with wildlife. The CDC pointed to “several high-profile rabies outbreaks and mass rabies exposure events” as part of what prompted this advisory, underscoring the importance of careful, evidence-based risk assessment whenever a potential exposure occurs.

Recent incidents illustrate the pattern. Baby goats at a petting zoo in North Carolina tested positive for rabies in the weeks before the advisory, exposing visitors in a single event. In Suffolk, Virginia, health officials separately warned residents this week after a raccoon within city limits tested positive for the virus. Raccoons remain one of the primary rabies reservoir species in the U.S., alongside bats and skunks, which together account for the large majority of the country’s reported animal rabies cases.

What Post-Exposure Prophylaxis Involves

Rabies is almost universally fatal once symptoms begin, but it is also one of the most preventable infectious diseases when treated promptly. PEP typically consists of a single dose of human rabies immunoglobulin, given as soon as possible after exposure, along with a series of at least four rabies vaccine doses administered over about two weeks. When given correctly and promptly, this regimen is highly effective at preventing the disease from developing.

That effectiveness depends heavily on getting both the risk assessment and the administration right, which is precisely what the CDC’s advisory is flagging. Administration errors, incomplete dosing, delayed treatment, or skipped immunoglobulin doses can all undermine protection. That’s also why timely access to primary and emergency healthcare matters so much in a rabies exposure: prophylaxis works, but only if patients can reach a clinician quickly and receive the full, correctly administered course, an access challenge that health systems in India and other countries continue working to close through initiatives like iKure’s primary healthcare network expansion.

Nationally, an estimated 1.4 million people in the U.S. seek medical care each year after animal contact, and roughly 100,000 of them go on to receive rabies PEP. Despite that volume of exposures, fewer than 10 people die from rabies in the U.S. annually, a testament to how well pet vaccination programs, animal control efforts, and post-exposure treatment work together when followed correctly. Hawaii remains the only rabies-free state in the country.

How to Protect Yourself From Rabies Exposure

The CDC’s guidance for the public is straightforward. Keep a distance from wild animals, and never approach one that appears sick, injured, or unusually tame, since rabid animals can sometimes act less fearful of humans than expected. If you encounter such an animal, contact local animal control rather than handling it yourself.

If you are bitten or scratched by any wild or unfamiliar animal, wash the wound immediately and thoroughly with soap and water, and seek medical evaluation right away rather than waiting to see if symptoms develop. Because rabies has no cure once symptoms start, prevention through prompt evaluation and, if warranted, PEP is the only reliable safeguard. Pet owners are also advised to keep dogs, cats, and other animals current on their rabies vaccinations and to keep them away from wildlife when possible.

A Broader Public Health Signal

This advisory follows a pattern of periodic rabies alerts in recent years, including a CDC report in early 2022 that flagged a cluster of bat-associated human rabies deaths. What distinguishes the current advisory is its focus not just on exposure numbers, but on the downstream risk of inconsistent post-exposure care itself, an issue that speaks to a broader theme in public health: catching risk early and acting on it correctly is often as important as the initial diagnosis. It’s the same logic behind the growing push toward preventive, technology-enabled diagnostics more broadly, where earlier, more consistent intervention is increasingly seen as key to better outcomes.

For now, the CDC’s message to both clinicians and the public is one of vigilance rather than alarm: rabies remains rare and highly preventable, but only when exposures are taken seriously, risk is assessed carefully, and treatment is administered correctly and on time.
